Māori and workplace engagement

Do Māori feel that Māori values are understood or even embraced at work? What difference does that make to the way Māori feel about their employment, their performance and their wellbeing? And what can employers do to boost the engagement of Māori staff?

Jarrod Haar for web Research by the University of Waikato's Jarrod Haar, right, (Pākehā, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Māhuta) is teasing out the answers to these questions, and he has just shared his insights with the December 2011/January 2012 issue of Mana magazine. 

Jarrod says that his research on 500 Māori employees is finding links between whānau and tikanga-friendly environments and greater career and life satisfaction, lower anxiety and lower stress, which has positive implications for bosses as well as for Māori mental health.
